TuCAT programme
The EFUOLC project includes the TuCAT training programme. It is a professional development programme designed to implement strategies and provide resources to promote the use of Catalan inside and outside the classroom in early childhood, primary, and secondary schools across Catalonia.
- TuCAT is built on three pillars: linguistic assertiveness, interactive and classroom management strategies, and language promotion. The training approach adopts a transdisciplinary and experiential perspective, integrating research evidence and reflective practice through five phases: establishing reflective groups, building on prior knowledge, discussing research evidence, practice and modelling, and implementation.
- The TuCAT Programme is designed to contribute to the development of the Quality of Language Education cross-curricular priority set out in the current Basic Education Curriculum for Catalonia (Decree 175/2022 of 27 September).
- The TuCAT Programme consists of two training modules (30 hours) for teachers, as well as a 6-hour training course for school lunch supervisors.
Objectives of Module 1
Understand the demolinguistic characteristics of the schools participating in the programme, including teachers, students, and families.
Reflect on the importance of argumentation in learning processes, changing language habits, and encouraging the use of Catalan.
Develop strategies for linguistic assertiveness and translate awareness into action.
Develop awareness of the language practices of the school community, particularly in relation to language use.
Objectives of Module 2
Assess the use of Catalan and the management of other languages within the school.
Expand classroom communication strategies to foster a climate of trust and confidence among students.
Become familiar with strategies for promoting the use of Catalan in the classroom through both horizontal and vertical interaction.
Promote collaborative learning through interaction.
Promote the linguistic landscape in school circulation areas and other non-teaching spaces.
Materials
Mòdul 1: Educational Sociolinguistics and Linguistic Assertiveness
The first module covers key concepts in educational sociolinguistics and linguistic assertiveness, explored through case analysis.
Mòdul 2: The Interactive Approach, Classroom Management Strategies, and Group Dynamics for Promoting the Use of Catalan Inside and Outside the Classroom
The second module focuses on content that encourages reflection on self-regulation activities related to language use in the classroom, sequences for fostering interactive dialogue, strategies for increasing dialogic talk, and a range of games to be implemented during breaks and in other leisure-time settings.
Participating Schools
The TuCAT Programme is implemented in participating schools throughout the project period. The training programme consists of 30 hours delivered across two modules. The schedule is agreed with each participating school (September–December 2025), after which teachers implement the programme from January to December 2026.
